Month of occurrence: Early February
It was a cold morning in the middle of winter, at 4am, two girls, my friend and I, with little sleep, got on a taxi to the airport to meet the rest of our group members, for our study visit trip.
Fast forward, we continued our sleep in the flight.
As we were reaching, I got up from my much needed nap and continued looking around, though there was nothing much to look at. Heh.
Though it was a budget flight, as long as I have my baby with me, all is good in my hood.
My brother once reminded me, “It’s not about the destination. It’s about who you travel with.”
Nonchalantly looking around, I was comfortably warming myself up in silence and Gary in my arm, not caring about what was going on in the empty flight.
I could hear my other friends chatting and laughing away. The sound of the engine(?) and footsteps of other passenger walking to and forth to the lavatory. Not to mention, the footstep sound of the aircraft crew.
As I was staring at a point and zoning out, a stewardess who was passing by, stopped, smiled and asked me, “Is he yours?”
I smiled and nod.
She smiled back at me, “What’s his name?”
“Gary,” I said, a manly voice came out from my mouth. Ahhh… Body is not fully warmed up yet.
I was half hoping she got the information she needed and would leave me alone. For I was partially embarrassed at my groggy voice.
“Come again? What’s his name?” She asked again with a smile.
*clears throat” “Gary,” I said again, slightly louder this time, and more feminine voice.
I can’t remember clearly what she said next, but I assume it was along the line “He’s handsome, take good care of him,” as she leave me with a smile.
I turned to my right and there, 3 of my other friend who’s been watching the little “skit” just burst into laughter and went “Gary” *shakes head and continue laughing*
Ishhh… Kureennnggg betull
Finally, we arrived for a short transit before continuing our second leg of flight. As I was in the line to alight, the same stewardess was by the door. She was holding a box of chocolate for the passengers. Come my turn, she smiled at me, offering me some with a smile, making me a little uncomfortable to not take one (or two). I took the chocolate and thank her. She smiled (again), and said “Assalamualaikum”, as I leave the aircraft.
The feeling of being greeted by another sister of faith in an almost non-existing Muslim environment just…. made my day.
As I was happily walking on the ground, I heard a little laughter followed by the word “Gary”.
Ishhh… Mintak kene cepuk!
